NBSMLT Position Statement on Pathology Assistants

The NBSMLT recognizes the important role of pathologist assistants in the provision of diagnostic services to the public. The category of pathology assistant is exempt from regulation by the NBSMLT under section 22(k) of An Act respecting the New Brunswick Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists

Due to the small number of pathology assistants and the specialized nature of their work, it is acknowledged that the skill sets required may be attained by a medical laboratory technologist after appropriate training and competency assessment under the supervision of a licensed pathologist.

While the NBSMLT supports regulation of this profession, that regulation is beyond the scope of the NBSMLT.
